Hooked on Fishing with Ernie

The unsettled weather that has dominated the end of 2023 will, by all predictions, continue into 2024 making holiday activities very difficult to plan.

In the case of fishing trips, great care needs to be taken when planning a boating outing either to the beach or launching on one of local dams.

Storm King Dam is 99.7% full and, due to the hot weather, has been very popular with water skiers, kayakers and jet skiers all sharing space with the anglers, so early morning is the best time for fishing activities. The Severn River and local creeks have good water flow however, due to the heavy rain associated with the storms, the cloudy water presents a challenge for anglers.

Leslie Dam at 83.5% capacity, is fishing well with Golden and Silver Perch being the most active species. I understand that anglers have been boating Murray Cod around 60cm however large Cod appear to be hiding. The holiday break has seen high volumes of watercraft on the Leslie Dam and patience is required when launching or retrieving boats.

Our contact, Debbie Dare at Glen Lyon Dam reports the fishing is still good and they are preparing for the influx of campers over the New Year weekend. The Golden Perch catches continue dominate however some good Murray Cod were caught and released earlier in the week.

Coolmunda Dam as previously reported is fully booked, and the fishing has been kind to most campers. The usual Golden and Silver Perch mix along with the occasional Murray Cod is keeping the anglers happy.

I am excited to advise that on the 2nd to the 4th of February 2024 the Stanthorpe Show will have a trailer displaying native and pest fish presented by the Freshwater Fishing & Stocking Association of Queensland.
