Warwick driver Matt Campbell has claimed the Motorsport Australia Gold Star for the first time in his career. Reimagined for 2025 after decades of being awarded to Australia’s champion driver in various eras of single-seater racing, this year’s Gold Star has been awarded via a pointscore and is open to drivers across a range of different categories both locally and internationally.
The season-long chase to determine Australia’s champion driver of 2025 sees drivers from all forms of circuit racing scored based on their positions in championship standings, combined with performances in high profile, marquee events. Campbell, a Porsche factory racer, won the IMSA SportsCar Championship aboard a Team Penske-run 963, while cameo appearances in the factory’s Hypercar in the FIA World Endurance Championship netted him eighth in the final drivers’ standings.
Under the Gold Star’s tiered points system, which is weighted towards success in prestigious global championships, the Warwick, Queensland, product earns 36 points for his WEC result and 50 for his IMSA title.
Campbell’s combined tally of 86 points put him six clear of longtime Gold Star leader Oscar Piastri. The McLaren driver’s performances which led to finishing third in the FIA Formula One World Drivers’ Championship delivered a final total of 80 points.
Broc Feeney hung on to third in the final Gold Star standings for 2025 despite his heartbreaking Supercars Championship loss on the final day of the season. His eventual third placing, allied to his GT World Challenge Australia crown, gives him a final tally of 65 points.
