One hundred and thirty budding producers were in Warwick for the four-day Santa Gertrudis Youth Camp at the Warwick Polocrosse Club Grounds at Morgan Park last week. The participants came from North Queensland south to Central New South Wales. All camped with their families in caravans, tents and all types of mobile accommodation.
The camp was the 16th held at the polocrosse grounds at Morgan Park, for about the same duration, previous camps had been held at the Warwick Showgrounds.
Camp co-ordinator Lachlan Martin said the youth in Warwick learnt about animal husbandry, how to lead and parade cattle, cattle presentation, safety, IVF and all aspects of veterinary services needed to care for cattle. There were 125 Santa Gertrudis cattle on the grounds to help with demonstrations and for participants “to have a go”.
On the first afternoon, Stan Hughes from Hughes Husanley Working Dogs at Pittsworth demonstrated how to work cattle and sheep with dogs.
