"A significant step" was marked recently when K-Life in Killarney announced new staff accommodation on the Southern Downs. Funded by the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing under the Aged Care Capital Assistance Program, the project is said to deliver six purpose-built housing units "designed specifically to attract and retain aged care workers in regional Queensland".

K'Life's Dannielle Hersant, who works in Community Engagement and Event Planning, told us construction for the one one-bedroom unit, three two-bedroom units and two three-bedroom units will commence shortly, towards completion at year's end.

"It is anticipated that staff will be able to move into the accommodation by January 2027, providing a timely response to current workforce shortages in the region," she said.

The units will accommodate a minimum of six staff, "with the flexibility to house additional staff and families where appropriate".

Further, the inclusion of larger two-and three-bedroom units "is a deliberate strategy to attract families to the area, supporting long-term workforce retention and community growth".

"This project has been designed as more than just staff housing," Ms Hersant said. "It provides a practical pathway for new employees relocating to Killarney, offering secure accommodation while they transition into the community.

"The longer-term goal is to encourage these individuals and families to settle permanently by purchasing or building locally, contributing to population growth and strengthening the region."

The project has received strong and positive feedback from the local community, she also confirmed, from those who "recognise the ongoing challenges in recruiting and retaining essential workers, including doctors and nurses".

"There is clear support for the initiative, with the community understanding that access to appropriate housing is a critical barrier to workforce attraction in regional areas."

K-Life Chair Kerri-Ann Lamb, CFO Andrew Millard, Specialised Property Consulting Project Manager Eric Williamson and Active Built General Manager Laurie Colledge marked the beginning of works with an official "ground-breaking" at the site.
