Water, water everywhere but not a drop to be seen
Addressing water concerns

Despite some encouraging moisture landing on the Southern Downs recently, including a flurry of snow on the Granite Belt on Tuesday last week, the SDRC is intensely focused on drought resilience, “new” water, and state government commitment to security.
Mayor Melissa Hamilton has shed her other portfolio commitments to focus solely on the water problem, a topic which has bedevilled local mayors well into last century.
Indeed, as part of the response to forecast drought, council has endorsed a tighter water target schedule for Stanthorpe to extend the water supply.
Average water use in the town is about 165 litres per person per day which, while lower than current permanent water use targets, could be improved.
Residents all understand the value of water, a fact that the mayor appreciates and doesn’t dismiss. She says that council is intent on proactive measures, and responding early rather than waiting for crises.
Many residents took to Facebook recently to discuss water leakage messages that the new smart water monitoring system has begun sending homeowners whose water usage appears to be above normal. Some residents have discovered water leaks that they were previously unaware of and have been able to carry out rectification works.
Meanwhile, Mayor Hamilton continues to pressure the Premier and the state government to fulfill their promise of water security measures.
Council is also increasing storage capacity, smart water metering, leak detection, education and, of course, monitoring dam levels.
